Protein and Energy
When we have something to eat our body gets to work and starts breaking it down into sugars which go immediately into to our blood stream. These sugars are produced from any type of food we consume. As these sugars are introduced to our blood supply from our stomach this causes a spike in our blood sugar levels. Our bodies are very sensitive to blood sugar levels if they are too low we can become lethargic or even collapse and go into a coma. If these sugar levels get too high they can cause damage to our internal organs.
When our sugar levels start to increase our pancreas gets a signal to start making a special substance called insulin. Insulin is needed to signal to muscle and fat cells to absorb some of this sugar, when it is absorbed by the fat cells it is turned into fat and stored as reserve energy that our body can call on when needed. When the sugars are introduced into the muscle cells it can be used instantly to be converted into energy. Our muscles use energy and burn up carbs even when they are stationary. If our pancreas overreacts and pumps in too much insulin then our blood sugar levels will drop to dangerous levels but usually a low blood sugar level will again signal for us to eat more food and as carbohydrates raises our blood sugar levels fast we usually crave for this type of food first. Carbohydrates and sugary foods can cause this high low effect as their sugars are absorbed very quickly into our system. Each time this cycle happens some sugar is burnt and the rest is stored as fatty tissue in our bodies. If we are not exercising and using this energy then the fats in our bodies begin to build up in excess levels. Protein on the other hand takes much longer to digest as the amino acids in it produce a much slower and more regulated insulin response from our pancreas. Protein also causes our bodies to release of a hormone called glucagon. Glucagon has the opposite effect of insulin which takes sugar from your blood and directs it into muscle and fat cells. Glucagon instructs your fat cells to release some of the stored fat into your bloodstream, where it provides fuel for your muscles, brain, and everything else that uses energy. So compared to all of the various types of food we consume, protein is by far the most balanced food source as it controls insulin levels and helps our bodies to use up fat. |
